“Something’s coming.”
“What!” Little Frog’s eyes widened to saucers at their grandfather’s warning. “But… I still haven’t found what I’m lookin for.”
“What are you looking for?”
“I…” Little Frog frowned, furrowing their brow. “I don’t know. I’ll know when I find it.”
“Then why are you looking?” Papa raised a brow at Little Frog. “Sounds like it’s supposed to find you.”
“No, that would be too easy.”
“Too easy!?” Papa shook his head at his grandchild(ren). “Shit, I thought life was hard enough. What’s wrong with the easy route?”
“If I don’t look for it, I’ll never know when it will come.”
“And what’s wrong with letting it come when it comes?”
“Because what am I supposed to do then?”Little Frog shouted, throwing their hands up. “I can’t just sit around waiting!”
“You could just live your life.”
They roll their eyes. Not this shit again.
“Hey kid, I’m only here because you, you stubborn bull, can’t seem to accept you’re allowed to live however you want, however you see fit. You know the way, so go. Follow it.”
The chorus of ancestors reverberates in Papa’s voice, a collective, a whole, coming together to make it clear:
You cannot be led astray.
What is for me cannot miss me, and what misses me was never for me.
